The LGBTQ+ Fostering Series: Fostering and Mental Health – What You Need to Know

3 June 2025 | The LGBTQ+ Fostering Series

Mental health is one of the most common topics raised by prospective foster carers. For LGBTQ+ individuals, this is especially important. We know that discrimination, social isolation, and past trauma can all impact mental wellbeing. But does that mean you can’t foster? Not at all.

At St David’s, we don’t expect perfect mental health. Instead, we want to understand how you manage your wellbeing, what support networks you have, and how you care for yourself in times of stress. It’s all part of building a picture of how you might respond to the ups and downs of caring for a child.

As part of the fostering process, all applicants undergo a medical assessment through their GP, which includes a mental health overview. We may also ask for a letter from a counsellor or therapist—not to disclose private details, but simply to confirm relevant dates and support.

Past struggles with anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions are not disqualifiers. In fact, they can often show resilience and self-awareness—key traits for foster carers. If you’ve learned coping strategies, engaged in therapy, or come through challenging periods stronger, that’s something to be recognised.

What matters most is where you are now, and how equipped you feel to take on the rewarding, demanding task of parenting a child who has experienced trauma.

If you’re worried about how your mental health history might impact your application, talk to us. We promise to approach every conversation with compassion and honesty.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Fostering is one of the most meaningful, life-changing things you can do. If you’ve been sitting with questions or doubts, we hope this series has helped clear the fog.

No matter your background, health, or history, if you have the compassion and stability to offer a child a safe and loving home, we’d love to hear from you.

To start a conversation, reach out to our team at St David’s. We’re here to listen—and ready to walk alongside you, every step of the way.

St David’s Fostering Service

Every child living with a foster family is provided with a nurturing environment in which to grow and thrive. Through a modernisation of placement approach we will provide open recruitment of foster carers focused on the needs of children and young people and we will support families who can nurture children living in Wales where a foster placement is needed.
