Disabled people make fantastic foster carers. Yet too often, prospective carers with disabilities don’t even apply—assuming they’ll be turned away.
Let’s challenge that idea. At St David’s, we recognise that disability does not mean inability. In fact, your lived experience may give you a powerful insight into what it means to feel different, to navigate systems, and to advocate for yourself—experiences that can profoundly benefit children in care.
What matters most is whether you can meet a child’s emotional and physical needs. If your disability requires certain adaptations or support, that doesn’t exclude you. Many carers—disabled or not—need additional tools or strategies to support them in their role.
Your GP and any specialists involved in your care can help determine how your disability might intersect with fostering. From there, our team will work with you to assess what support might be helpful and how to ensure your home is ready.
Children in care come from all walks of life. Some have disabilities themselves, and seeing a carer living fully and positively with a disability can be a powerful model.
If you’ve been hesitating, reach out. We’re here to listen, and we’re ready to welcome you just as you are.
