The LGBTQ+ Fostering Series: Can I Foster If I Have a Medical Condition?

3 June 2025 | The LGBTQ+ Fostering Series

Living with a medical condition is more common than you might think—and it’s absolutely not a reason to rule yourself out from fostering.

Whether you’re managing diabetes, recovering from a past illness, or living with something long-term like HIV or asthma, what fostering agencies are interested in is your current health and how well your condition is managed. We want to know: can you meet the needs of a child today, and do you have the capacity to parent into the future?

All fostering applicants complete a medical assessment with their GP, which looks at both physical and mental health, as well as general lifestyle. If you’ve had treatment for a serious illness, it can be helpful to speak to your GP in advance and ask whether they feel this is the right time to apply.

HIV, for instance, is often surrounded by misunderstanding. But in fostering, it’s treated like any other long-term condition. What matters is how you manage it, what support you have, and how it might intersect with parenting a child who may have complex needs.

For LGBTQ+ applicants, we also understand that medical settings may come with added layers of anxiety or fear of discrimination. That’s why we take extra care to ensure you feel seen, respected, and safe throughout the process.

If you’ve been putting off enquiring because of a health issue, know that we’ll approach your situation with openness and care. Let’s talk.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Fostering is one of the most meaningful, life-changing things you can do. If you’ve been sitting with questions or doubts, we hope this series has helped clear the fog.

No matter your background, health, or history, if you have the compassion and stability to offer a child a safe and loving home, we’d love to hear from you.

To start a conversation, reach out to our team at St David’s. We’re here to listen—and ready to walk alongside you, every step of the way.
